What you'll do on day 5
- Transfer to the airport (driver) and flight to Salta. Upon arrival transfer to the town of Cafayate (about 3 hours), a wine-producing town. En route, excursion to Guachipas, a picturesque village in the foothills, near which lies the Cuevas Pintadas de Guachipas archaeological complex, in the Las Juntas area. Here, in the red sandstone cliffs, there are more than 40 shelters and caves with nearly a thousand rock paintings, created between 500 and 1500 AD using natural pigments. The panels depict llama caravans, anthropomorphic “shield people” figures (hombres escudos), ritual and hunting scenes. One of the most significant collections of rock art in northwestern Argentina. The route passes through some of the most impressive landscapes of Salta Province winding mountain roads, cactus forests and panoramic views of the Calchaquí Valley.
