You've decided on Finland for the Northern Lights — but where in Lapland should you actually base yourself? Three names come up again and again: Rovaniemi, Saariselkä and Levi. Here's how they compare for an Indian traveller.
Rovaniemi — the all-rounder
The capital of Finnish Lapland and the easiest to reach, with its own airport and the overnight train from Helsinki. It's home to Santa Claus Village, has the widest choice of hotels, restaurants and activities, and works brilliantly for families and first-timers. Because it's a town, you'll head out on guided aurora hunts to escape the city lights. Best for: first trips, families, Santa + aurora combined. Explore Rovaniemi.
Saariselkä — the aurora specialist
Further north and much smaller, deep in the wilderness — which means darker skies and excellent Northern Lights odds right from your accommodation. It's a leading area for glass igloos and aurora cabins. Fewer restaurants and shops, more nature. Best for: serious aurora chasers and honeymooners who want remoteness. See Saariselkä.
Levi — the activity resort
Finland's biggest ski resort, with lots of slopes, dining and nightlife alongside the aurora and safaris. Livelier and more built-up than the others. Best for: travellers who want skiing and buzz with their Northern Lights. See Levi.
Which should you choose?
- First Finland trip / with kids / want Santa too: Rovaniemi.
- Maximum aurora odds, glass igloo, honeymoon quiet: Saariselkä.
- Skiing and a lively resort feel: Levi.
The best trips often combine two — a couple of nights in Rovaniemi for Santa and the sights, then further north for darker skies. No single night guarantees the aurora, so wherever you stay, give it three or more nights.
