One of the most common worries we hear from Indian travellers isn't the cold or the visa — it's the food. "Will I find vegetarian meals in Lapland?" The honest answer: yes, with a little planning. Here's what to expect.
In Helsinki and bigger towns
Helsinki has genuine Indian restaurants and plenty of vegetarian-friendly cafés, so eating is easy on the city portion of a trip. Supermarkets stock paneer-style cheese, lentils, rice, breads, fruit and lots of vegetarian options if you want to self-cater.
In Lapland (Rovaniemi and the far north)
This is where it needs more planning. Rovaniemi has a few Indian and Asian restaurants and hotels can usually do vegetarian dishes, but choice thins out at remote igloo resorts and small villages. Finnish cuisine is meat- and fish-heavy, though vegetarian sides (potatoes, breads, soups, salads) are always available.
How Indian-focused tours handle it
This is the big advantage of travelling with an operator that knows Indian tastes: on our trips we arrange Indian or vegetarian meals where possible, brief hotels in advance, and can accommodate Jain, vegan and no-onion-garlic requirements with notice. It removes the daily "what can I even eat here?" stress.
Practical tips
- Carry backups: ready-to-eat packets, khakhra, dry snacks and masala tea bags travel well and are lifesavers on long transfer days.
- Tell us early: share dietary needs at booking, not on arrival, so meals can be arranged ahead.
- Breakfast is easy: most hotels do generous buffets with plenty of vegetarian choices.
- Water: Finnish tap water is among the cleanest in the world — safe to drink everywhere.
