Standing on the runners of your own sled while a team of huskies pulls you through silent, snow-covered forest — for many travellers it's the highlight of the whole Finland trip.
What it's actually like
After a short safety briefing you'll usually ride two-per-sled, taking turns to drive and sit. The dogs are fast, eager and loud with excitement at the start, then settle into a smooth rhythm. Distances range from short 2–5 km taster rides to half-day wilderness safaris.
Is it safe? Any age limits?
Yes, it's beginner-friendly and guides ride with the group. Children can almost always ride as passengers bundled in the sled; minimum ages to drive vary by operator. Tell us your group's ages and we'll match the right safari.
What to wear
Thermal base layers, warm mid-layer, and the insulated outerwear, boots, gloves and hats most of our packages provide. Standing still on a sled gets cold — layers matter.
Choosing an ethical husky farm
We only work with farms where the dogs are well cared for, warmly kennelled and clearly love to run. You'll usually get time to meet and photograph the puppies too.
Husky safaris feature in most of our winter itineraries. See also our Lapland destinations or ask us anything.
