Few holidays land with children like a Finnish winter — real snow, real reindeer, and the actual Santa Claus. If you're an Indian parent weighing up Lapland, here's how to make it smooth for the whole family.

What kids love most

  • Santa Claus Village — meeting Santa, crossing the Arctic Circle, posting a card home.
  • Huskies and reindeer — gentle sleigh rides even little ones can enjoy.
  • Snow play — for many Indian kids it's their first real snow, and that alone makes the trip.
  • Ranua Wildlife Park — polar bears, arctic foxes and owls, close up.

Best time for families

Late February to March is often ideal: plenty of snow, the deep cold has eased slightly, and there's more daylight than in December — easier for kids' body clocks. December is the most festive but the coldest and darkest.

Practical tips for Indian parents

  • Keep the pace gentle. Short winter days plus jet lag mean one big activity a day is enough.
  • Dress them properly. Kids feel the cold fast — thermal layers, insulated boots, gloves, a warm cap. Many operators lend Arctic suits for children.
  • Food: ask about Indian/vegetarian meals; picky eaters do better when familiar food is arranged.
  • Reindeer over snowmobiles for young children — calmer and slower.

How long to go

Six to eight days works well — a couple of days easing in, the Santa and safari days, and a few nights for the Northern Lights (kids can join early-evening hunts). Our family packages are built around this rhythm.
